Systematic partitions of space used to index and tile data, from the sheet divisions of historical map series to web tiling schemes.
Sphere: Reference Framework
Scope
- National square grids used as an index: for example, the Danish Kvadratnet cell names (1 km, 10 km, 100 km)
- Discrete global grid systems: H3, S2, DGGAL indices
- Map sheet divisions: Current and historical sheet schemes (e.g., Historiske Kortbladsinddelinger), needed to locate scanned historical maps
- Tiling schemes: Web map tile matrices used by tile services
Key Distinction: Indexing vs Reporting
A grid used to index or tile space belongs here. When the same grid is used as a statistical reporting unit (e.g., population per km² cell), it is a statistical unit. The predefined Danish and European statistical grids, and how to align an ad hoc grid with them, are described under Statistical grids.
