Geometry generation — Operator family

Geometry generation Operators create new geometry by a rule, not from observed data: a grid of cells, a regular set of sample points. The result is a frame for other data, so its rule — size, shape, origin — is a choice that shapes every result built on it.

Part of the Operators families. Used in: Aggregating points to zones (Task).

Generate grid

Operator Schema: cells of equal size and shape covering an extent: squares or hexagons (polygons), or their centre points or edges.

Choices to record:

  • Predefined or ad hoc. If an official grid exists for the purpose — the Danish Kvadratnet or the European statistical grid, see Statistical Units — use it, or generate cells that coincide with it exactly. An ad hoc grid is for questions no official grid serves, and its results cannot be compared with others’.
  • Shape: square or hexagon; see Square and hexagonal grids.
  • Size: the cell size sets the scale of the result.
  • Origin and CRS: a square grid aligned with an official grid starts at its corner values in its CRS (for the Danish grid, round kilometres in EPSG:25832; the European grid is in EPSG:3035, so the two do not coincide).
