Biodiversity

Biodiversity studies ask where species and habitats are, in what condition, and how they are protected. In GIS the work is mostly about habitats: defining which areas count as habitat, mapping their types and condition, and relating them to the protection and land use around them. How the habitats are arranged and connected is the concern of landscape ecology.

Typical questions

  • Which areas are habitat, of which types, and in what condition?
  • How much habitat is protected, and by which rules (§3, Natura 2000, forest designations)?
  • Where are species observed, and how do observations relate to habitats?
