SemanticGIS plugin for QGIS

The SemanticGIS plugin brings the data network of this site into QGIS. You browse it the same way as on the website, and a double-click on a service adds it as a layer.

What it does

  • Browse the data network. The panel has the same seven entrances as Data on this site: SPHERE, Classical Classifications (INSPIRE, ISO 19115, UN-GGIM), Collection Methods, Datasets by Collection, Datasets by Owner, the Reference Framework and Basemaps. Leaves and datasets can be searched.
  • Add layers. WFS, WMS, WMTS, WCS and XYZ services are added with one double-click. When several providers serve the same dataset, the preferred and verified service is marked ★.
  • Keep the provenance. Every layer is grouped under its leaf and tagged with the leaf, dataset and service it came from, so a saved project still knows where its data came from.
  • Credit the data. Every layer carries its attribution line, and Copy attributions for the map gives the lines for a print layout.
  • Join a table to reference units. A statistics table with unit IDs or names, such as municipality codes or NUTS codes, gets the geometry of the matching units.
  • Processing tools. The plugin adds tools to the Processing Toolbox under SemanticGIS, among them Tabulate area and Zonal statistics by class, which use the legend labels of a categorical raster in their output.
  • Show web page. Every item in the panel opens its page on this site.

Installing

The plugin is not in the official QGIS plugin repository yet. It is installed from its own channel:

  1. In QGIS, open Plugins › Manage and Install Plugins › Settings, click Add…, give the channel a name (for example SemanticGIS) and paste this address: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Esbern/semanticGIS-qgis/plugin-repository/stable.xml
  2. Find SemanticGIS under All and click Install Plugin. New versions then appear under Upgradeable.
  3. Open the panel from Web › SemanticGIS.

See Managing QGIS plugins for the Plugin Manager in general. The source code and a full description are on GitHub.
